Annual Delmarva Paddlers Retreat
It was in 1988 that Charlie Cole and his lovely wife Cindy
started an annual gathering of paddlers on the western shore of Rehoboth Bay in
Lewes, DE, to exchange paddling skills and knowledge – today that has become an
annual gathering at which Greenland-style sea-kayakers gather to celebrate the
origins of kayaking and hone traditional kayaking techniques and skills
In 2008 they offered
an "extended" Delmarva option (early arrival) as well. See
for a report from a previous year's event. Registrations begin July 4th and
are usually full by the first week of September.
Qajaq USA event , the
Delmarva Paddlers Retreat
is held at Camp Arrowhead across the Rehoboth Bay from Dewey Beach, Delaware.
The Retreat has evolved into a gathering of traditional skills enthusiasts.
All instruction will be geared towards Greenland techniques, so a Greenland
paddle is preferred. Accommodations are cabins (bunks) or tenting under
the pines near the bay shoreline. Enjoy learning to kayak the Greenland
way. Mentoring from some of the best in the nation. Skills learned
can be transferred back to the Euro blade, but why once you’ve paddled the stick
you won’t want to go back.
This event has no
relationship to the
message board, but many of us are there. (same webmaster too)
The Sultana Projects hosts a three-day festival known as
Downrigging Weekend to celebrate the close of Sultana's sailing season.
Tall ships and historic vessels from across the mid-Atlantic and beyond
visit Sultana's home port of Chestertown for this three-day public event
which draws over 10,000 people to Chestertown. The weekend features
opportunities for the public to view, board and even sail on an impressive
fleet of visiting ships, schooners and skipjacks.
