"Thanks to all who made the event such a success!"
Marc Cleary Photos are available at www.printroom.com/pro/marcclery Great turn out, 97 registered boats, 96 in the water. A few highlights: Congrats to Susan for shaving over an hour off her time and in beating the Yellow Rabbit in a photo finish. Ashley for her best time, which included beating me. Judy Jeans had a great finish holding off the second place boat for a first place in the Single Canoe division, good luck to her in her upcoming 90 miler. Bill Hahn with Charles Thornton placed third. Combined age, 163 years old. If Judy and Tony ever get a long glass double kayak they’ll have first with room to spare, but I need to thank them for the wake they put out as they blew past me, it did give me a little boast. Marc Cleary Photos are available at www.printroom.com/pro/marcclery --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Boadkill River Canoe & Kayak Race continued in its winning ways on Saturday, August 27th and raised over $17,000 to support the Milton Development Corporation and its ongoing Milton Theatre Project. The sixth annual river race, presented this year by sponsor Gemcraft Homes, attracted 96 boat entries (an all time high) and recorded some of the fastest paddling times ever. Even so, the race retained the recreational and family-friendly spirit that has made it such a popular Delmarva event. This can only be attributed to a hearty crew of volunteers, loyal advertisers and sponsors, and a consistently exceptional roster of enthusiastic paddlers. They all deserve much more than the following brief mention…. Volunteers “extraordinaire”, Christine Davis and Donna Miller registered racers in the early morning hours at Oyster Rock Rd. and continued on to time each boat & identify winners at the finish line in Milton’s Memorial Park (where Joanie Martin-Brown and grandson, Trent were holding down the fort until racers appeared.) After performing another Herculean effort of soliciting advertising in the official race brochure (funded in part by the Delaware Tourism Office,) Leah Betts and Connie Fisher distributed the traditional race shirts, this year sponsored by Bayhealth Medical Center; Comcast; Dickinson Medical Group, LLC; Federal Street Financial Services, Happy Harry’s; Herizon Construction & Management; Miltonian Pizzeria & Wing House; Sen. Thurman Adams, Jr. of the 19th Senatorial District; and Short Funeral Services. Karla Draper made sure race numbers were securely taped to every boat and that every racer had cool bottled water at both the start and the finish, while Bill Fisher helped out wherever and whenever help was needed. A large crowd of supportive onlookers was on hand to cheer the racers from the marshy shore line at Oyster Rocks when Dr. Charles Wagner, president of the MDC, called the start of the race with the single kayak and single canoe divisions leading off, and then dual kayaks and dual canoes following. Many thanks to the Milton, Lewes and Indian River Fire Departments’ Marine Fire & Safety teams that patrolled the 10-mile course up the Broadkill River, as well as, to the private “comfort boats” captained by Jack Hudson, Jerry Hudson and Kevin Burdette and their respective crews. Despite a surprise downpour an hour into the race, there was no dampening of spirits at the finish line. Ellen Passman enthusiastically welcomed the incoming paddlers and announced the top three finishers in each of the four boat categories, and winners in the new women’s divisions. Top finishers received cash prizes and trophies, courtesy of Sen. Thurman Adams of the 19th Senatorial District; Delmarva Power; and Dr. & Mrs. James C. White. A special “couldn’t do it without you” thanks to everyone at Quest Fitness in Lewes—from promoting the race, to renting kayaks, to timing, to transportation…they do it all! While race organizers were organizing the race itself, Holly Smith sold T-shirts and other MDC merchandise in the park, and Suzette Riggin and Bob Blayney held down the Milton Theatre, where free movies played throughout the day. Finally, a nod to the incredible lineup of paddlers that showed up for this year’s race and past races. The annual Broadkill River Canoe & Kayak Race would not be the exceptional event it has developed into if it were not for them. Their energy and spirit of adventure is amazing. This collective effort enables the historic Milton Theatre to emerge as a landmark in Milton’s Town Center once again, and to provide a unique venue for community festivals, private programming, and entertaining cultural arts productions. Until next year, a final thank you to all. Karen S. Duffield, Executive Director Milton Development Corporation
